Apps that skip the subscription, or tie the price to real use, are winning attention this autumn: Chromagraph Camera sells for $12.99 once with no subscription, and MailCheap, built after beehiiv's latest price rise, prices its plans by the emails you send instead of the size of your list (Newsshooter, October 28, 2026; MailCheap, checked October 29, 2026). AI video works the same way on AIVeed: credit packs start at $5 for 600 credits, the credits never expire, and a 6-second Seedance 2.0 Mini clip costs 50 credits, $0.25 on the $99 / 20,000-credit Business pack (AIVeed pricing and AIVeed API model catalog, checked October 29, 2026).
This post looks at what the latest no-subscription launches have in common, why people are choosing them, and how to make AI video on AIVeed without signing up to a monthly plan.
Why are no-subscription apps winning?
No-subscription apps are winning because people can see exactly what they pay for, and the price can't change under them after they've paid. Three signals from October 2026 show the pattern:
- Chromagraph Camera, an iPhone camera app made by cinematographer Steve Yedlin with Rian Johnson and Eric Cameron, went on sale in October at $12.99 as a one-off payment, not a subscription (Newsshooter, October 28, 2026).
- MailCheap, a newsletter tool, charges for emails sent rather than subscribers held: its hosted plans are monthly, from $19 for 20,000 emails, and the code is open for anyone to run on their own server with no plan at all (MailCheap, checked October 29, 2026).
- "Open source alternative" projects are multiplying: Trends.vc counted 1,427 new GitHub repositories describing themselves that way, up from 378 a year earlier (Trends.vc, October 28, 2026).
What links them is control. A one-time price can't be raised at renewal, and a price per unit of real use doesn't charge you in a month you didn't use it or shrink what you get while the bill stays the same.
What happened with beehiiv and MailCheap?
beehiiv raised its newsletter plans for new customers on October 1, 2026: at 10,000 subscribers, the plan formerly called Scale went from $109 to $139 a month as Lite, and Max went from $219 to $239 as Pro. Existing customers move to the new prices at their first renewal on or after November 1, 2026 (Net Influencer, October 6, 2026). Creators pushed back. Freelance journalist Tim Stevens wrote that Beehiiv is hiking its fees 25%, making this an even less profitable endeavor.
CEO Tyler Denk defended the change: We don't grow beehiiv by just raising prices.
(both as reported by Net Influencer, October 6, 2026).
Developer Marc Lou, a beehiiv customer, built his own replacement. On October 10, 2026 he released MailCheap as open source on X, describing self-hosted newsletters on Amazon SES at $0.10 per 1,000 emails
and adding 92% cheaper than Beehiiv (for me).
(Marc Lou on X, October 10, 2026). The post had more than 376,000 views when we checked it on October 29. Trends.vc reports that the hosted version had reached $421 from 19 subscriptions nine days after launch (Trends.vc, October 28, 2026).
Why does subscription pricing feel risky in AI right now?
AI subscriptions feel risky because what a plan includes can change faster than its price. In September 2026 OpenAI announced that ChatGPT Pro 200 would drop from 20x to 10x the Plus allowance on October 30 at the same $200; on October 29 it reversed course and doubled limits across its Pro tiers instead (The Next Web, September 29, 2026; Thibault Sottiaux on X, October 29, 2026). Our write-up of the ChatGPT Pro reversal covers the detail. Subscribers who planned around the cut spent a month planning for a change that never came.
Video plans have a second catch: unused allowance often disappears. Pika's plan credits do not roll over and refresh each billing period, and its top-up credits expire 365 days after purchase (Pika pricing, checked October 29, 2026). A quiet month on a plan like that is money spent on nothing. Pika's newest model, H3 Flex, is sold per second on Pika's API instead; our Pika H3 Flex price comparison puts it next to the models on AIVeed.
Is there an AI video generator without a subscription?
AIVeed is an AI video generator without a subscription: you buy a credit pack once, the credits never expire, and they work across every model on the platform, including Veo 3.1, Kling 3.0, Seedance 2.0 and 2.5, Wan 3.0, MiniMax H3, Gemini Omni and Grok Imagine (AIVeed pricing, checked October 29, 2026). Failed generations are refunded automatically, every new account starts with 200 free credits, and the same credits work in the AIVeed API at the same per-model prices.
| AIVeed pack | Price, once | Credits | Seedance 2.0 Mini · 480p · 6s (50 credits) | Grok Imagine · 480p · 6s (60 credits) |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Pilot | $5 | 600 | $0.42 · 12 clips | $0.50 · 10 clips |
| Starter | $19 | 3,000 | $0.32 · 60 clips | $0.38 · 50 clips |
| Popular | $49 | 9,000 | $0.27 · 180 clips | $0.33 · 150 clips |
| Business | $99 | 20,000 | $0.25 · 400 clips | $0.30 · 333 clips |
How much does AI video cost without a subscription?
On AIVeed, a 6-second AI video costs from 50 credits, which is $0.25 on the $99 / 20,000-credit Business pack or $0.42 on the $5 / 600-credit Pilot pack (Seedance 2.0 Mini at 480p, AIVeed API model catalog, checked October 29, 2026). An ~8-second Veo 3.1 Fast clip with sound costs 120 credits ($0.59 on Business), a 15-second MiniMax H3 clip at 768p costs 240 credits ($1.19 on Business), and a 6-second Kling 3.0 Standard clip costs 225 credits ($1.11 on Business). You pay those amounts only in the months you actually make something.
Who is pay-per-use AI video best for?
Pay-per-use AI video suits anyone whose output changes from month to month: a creator with a busy launch week and a quiet fortnight, a marketer making clips for one campaign, a developer testing models before choosing one, or a team that wants to try every major model without a plan for each. Larger packs bring the cost per credit down, from $0.00833 on Pilot to $0.00495 on Business, so heavy users get volume pricing without a monthly commitment. Our pay-per-use vs subscriptions guide works through the break-even maths, and our look at Kling's renewal pricing shows what can change on a plan at renewal.
Pick a model to start with on the AIVeed Seedance page, the AIVeed Veo3.1 page or the AIVeed MiniMax H3 page.
Methodology and verification
Verified on October 29, 2026. Chromagraph's price and terms come from Newsshooter's launch report; MailCheap's pricing from its own site; Marc Lou's quotes and view count from his post on X; beehiiv's price changes and the Stevens and Denk quotes from Net Influencer; repository counts and MailCheap's early revenue from Trends.vc, which we did not verify independently. ChatGPT Pro details come from The Next Web and Thibault Sottiaux's post on X; Pika's credit terms from Pika's pricing page.
AIVeed packs come from AIVeed pricing and per-clip credits from the public AIVeed API model catalog. Dollar figures are credits × pack price ÷ pack credits, rounded once: 50 credits is $0.417 ($0.42) on Pilot, $0.317 ($0.32) on Starter, $0.272 ($0.27) on Popular and $0.2475 ($0.25) on Business; 60 credits is $0.50, $0.38, $0.327 ($0.33) and $0.297 ($0.30). Clip counts are pack credits ÷ clip credits, rounded down. No video was generated for this post.
